THE AREA

The small mountain village of Acequias is situated at the edge of the Sierra Nevada national park. The snow capped mountain peaks, rising to over 11,000 feet, give a dramatic back drop to the village. There are a wealth of villages to explore in the Alpujarras, Trevelez, the highest village in Spain, is famous for its Serrano Hams, salted and cured in the air. The pretty villages of Pampaneira, Bubion, Capileira, and Orgiva with its new age shops and the spa town of Lanjaron are nearby.
On the coast is the white town of Salobrena with its castle. Nerja, famous for the caves and the Balcon de Europe, is about an hour away. Inland the town of Alhama de Granada makes a pleasant day out with country side reminiscent of England in the sunshine.
With its forest and mountain trails, along with the GR7 long distance foot path, the area is well served for those wishing to explore on foot, particularly for anyone wanting a Spring or Autumn break when the weather is cooler.
In the Summer there are municipal swimming pools in the surrounding villages, and a Water Park at Almunecar. Horse riding is available in the nearby village of Niguelas. There are golf courses at Salobrena and Granada.
