Melegis Castle
***

Walk details
An easy walk in a fertile valley among the orange groves. Extensive views of the Sierra Nevada mountains from the castle. Time about 3 hours. Not recommended after heavy rain due to long detour when leaving Melegis. (You will have another 360 days when you can do the walk)

Driving Instructions
From Talara take the road heading down hill past the Banco Popular towards Melegis. Follow the road for five km and when you enter the village take the right turn on the top side of the Basket ball court, park here.

Walk directions
Walk along the road with basketball court on your left until you come to a fountain on your right. Turn left here down Calle Jazmin and go to the end of the street and turn right. Follow the road out of the village down the slight hill and across the stream ( If it has rained heavily the stream becomes a river and you will have to take the road down the side of the stream and then cross it further down and retrace your steps). Go up the hill and at the junction turn right. Follow this road along ignoring any turning to the left or right. When you start to go down the hill your objective comes into view on the hill in front of you. At the bottom of the hill take the road to your right, (still heading towards the castle). Continue to the end of the road and take the footpath that leads around the left hand side of the ruined house. Follow the footpath as it climbs the hill to the Acequias. (If the Acequias is dry take the path by its side and then walk in it when the path disappears. Continue in the Acequias until the way is blocked by Bamboo) If you are unable to walk in the Acequias continue to walk along the path down the hill and up the other side. Continue along the path until you come to a indistinct path going off to your right by the side a vegetable patch. The path heads for a fire damaged tree on the Acequias banking. Scramble up the banking and cross the Acequias and up the Bamboo tunnel. At the top take the level path to the left amongst the oranges groves. The path soon climbs up to the right and comes out on a little access road ( at the time of writing there is also a pile of abandoned building materials). Follow the road around and cross another Acequias until you come to another road coming in from the right, Turn right up here back towards the castle. At the top the road goes to your left along the side of Cyprus hedge, take the path to the right alongside the hedge and towards the castle. Cross the castle walls and carefully climb up into the keep.
The return path is either back the way you came (or you can take an indistinct path down the hill) go down inside the castle walls and then head to your left to pick up a distinct path in the valley floor, turn right along this path and into the orange groves. The path soon disappears as it goes into the terraced groves. Just keep following the terraces down there is a way in and out of each one. You are heading for the valley to your left, eventually you will come out onto the road you walked on earlier, turn left and retrace your steps to Melegis.
